What you must know to visit Britain

Entering Britain

Identification

Entering the United Kingdom, you must show a valid national passport or other equivalent official document to establish properly your identity and nationality.

Visa

UK flagIf you are not a citizen of the European Union or Commonwealth, you will need a visa.
If you have a valid passport and UK visa, you will be able to enter the UK. When you arrive in Britain your visa tells UK immigrations:

  • The reason you are travelling to Britain
  • How long you are allowed to stay
  • The last day you are allowed to be in Britain

Pets

Usually, you are not allowed to bring any pets to Britain. Nonetheless if you really want to bring it you have to do it via selected ports of entry under the pilot Pets Travel Scheme without quarantine - provided certain conditions are met.

The British currency is the pound sterling (GBP). Consult the exchange rate in real time: www.xe.com

Value Added Tax

All purchases in Britain are subject to Value Added Tax (or VAT), which is 17.5 percent.

The country code for dialing UK is 0044. PayPhones normally work with phone cards, best way is to use a pre-paid international phone card.
The emergency phone number is 112 or 999.

Electrical power

Power in the UK is via a 3 rectangular pin socket; it is 220- 240V 50Hz AC power, you may need an adapter.

Weather in Britain

The summer period is from July until around the end of August. The weather can change very quickly in England and the differences between hot and cold can be very sudden: you must pack warm and waterproof clothes.
