Othello

Othello, the William Shakespeare's tragedy based on the Italian story "Un Capitano Moro" (A Moorish Captain) that dates back to 1565. The production of The Northern Broadsides and West Yorkshire Playhouse is making a great come back on stage. It will now show at Trafalgar Studios from the 18th of September until the 12th of December 2009.

The plot concentrates on four main characters: the protagonist Othello who is a Moorish general employed by the Venetian army, his wife Desdemona, the lieutenant Cassio and the ensign Iago.

The tragedy starts off when Othello secretly decides to marry Desdemona, the daughter of a Venetian senator Brabantio. This marriage makes Rodrigo annoyed as he had previously asked for Desdemona`s hand. The rich and dissolute gentleman complains to Iago who, in turn, holds a private grudge against Othello. The Moorish general in fact promoted Cassio, a younger and less experienced man over Iago.

Rodrigo and Iago decide to destroy Othello. Iago plans the suspicion in Othello's mind that Desdemona has been unfaithful to him with Cassio. And Othello, worn down by jealousy, strangles his innocent wife.

A story over-filled with racism, love and jealousy. It is about how the love of two people gets destroyed by one person's obsessive behaviour. Emotional, passionate and touching, this tragedy unveils the real nature of human.

In the lead role we will see Lenny Henry who is better known for his appearances in TV series such as Three of a Kind, Chef. Conrad Nelson is in the play as Iago, while Jessica Harris takes on the role of Desdemona and Matt Connor plays Rodrigo. Amazing set design by Ruari Murchison and costume design by Stephen Snell.
